The most sacred date on the South Australian calendar is under threat, with a plot to move the Christmas Pageant.
Established in 1933, the event is staged annually on the second Saturday of November, and in SA has been the historic trigger for seasonal family celebrations from that day until Santa arrives on December 25.
But now Adelaide City Councillor Carmel Noon has floated the idea to move it at a meeting on Tuesday night.
She said during her campaign for election last October it was a hot topic for businesses who want it moved from the traditional Saturday timeslot to Sunday.
“There are two major issues. One was the Pageant and how disruptive it was for retailers and the other was parking around the city,’’ Cr Noon said.
“There is support for a council survey of ratepayers, stakeholders and members to gather data, that would inform our next step.”
The council will fund this year’s Christmas Pageant with $75,000, but no change to the date could be made into 2024.
