THE man who stabbed Giovanni Focarelli outside his father's Hindley St tattoo parlour in 2010 has been sentenced to 10 years and four months in jail for the horrific attack.

Hameed Ullah Dastagir, 27, was found guilty by jury of one aggravated count of unlawfully causing serious harm with intent to cause serious harm.

Today, Supreme Court Justice Kevin Nicholson said the attack was "planned and violent... executed in cold blood".

Giovanni Focarelli's father Vince - who has survived six attempts on his life in Adelaide's underworld wars - was released from jail late last month.

His first action after being released from jail was to visit Giovanni's grave - his son was shot dead in early 2012 in an ambush at Dry Creek.

Vince Focarelli is being housed in an undisclosed location in Adelaide's southwestern suburbs. Police believe his life is still in danger from his underworld enemies.

According to CCTV footage and statements from people who witnessed the 2010 Hindley St attack, Giovanni Focarelli approached a dark Nissan Skyline on Hindley St and was stabbed twice by the passenger.

"This was not a case of an altercation spiralling out of control," Justice Nicholson said.

"There was no delay, no time for conversation of any substance. As soon as he arrived at the car he was stabbed."

Giovanni Focarelli was stabbed once in the stomach and once in the chest.

Justice Nicholson said the injuries were "very serious - if left untreated they were life-threatening".

"You are very fortunate that Mr Focarelli did not die," he said.

Mr Focarelli was then shot dead in January last year in an incident that Justice Nicholson said was "apparently unrelated".

Justice Nicholson sentenced Dastagir to 10 years and four months in jail with a non-parole period of six years after pleading guilty to drug and firearm charges.

"This must be seen in the context of a serious example of a very serious offence that involved conduct that was life-threatening, premeditated, brazen and unexplained," he said.
