Video: Residents sick of rubbish illegally dumped along Lewiston roads

Fed up with the amount of illegal dumping in her area, one woman has filmed the incredible amount of rubbish tossed on to the road in just one night. VIDEO

Rubbish dumped along Lewiston road

Residents in Adelaide’s north are sick of illegal dumping in remote locations after two streets were left strewn with rubbish.

Shopping trolleys, overflowing bins, mattresses and broken furniture were among the items dumped on 200m stretches on Dawkins and Boundary roads at Lewiston.

Resident Suzy Mansfield, who filmed the mess on Monday morning, said it was not the first time rubbish was illegally dumped on the quieter streets of Lewiston.

“It’s a common thing to see rubbish dumped around the area but this mess would have to be the most I’ve seen in one dumping,” she said.

“It looked as though someone had driven along and just pushed it all off the back of a truckIt was shocking. Many people are disgusted with it in local Facebook groups.

“So many people dump their crap out here on the back roads. It would be good for those who do this to see that it has a huge impact on our beautiful area and we are getting sick of it.”

Council waste collection workers used truck loaders to clean up the clutter on Monday.

A council spokesman said the area was a target for illegal dumping because it was close to the northern suburbs, had quieter streets and fewer people in the community watching out.

Unfortunately this means the council is unable to find the culprit unless evidence is found in the rubbish or the public sends in a tip-off.

The council will trial a portable camera in known dumping hot spots from next year but Dawkins and Boundary roads are not included.

Ms Mansfield said the lack of street lighting and proximity to houses, as well as expensive dump fees, could be reasons behind the littering.

“It would be good for those who do this to see that it has a huge impact on our beautiful area and we are getting sick of it,” she said.

“Not to mention our poor council workers having to waste time cleaning it up when there’s no doubt other things they could be doing.”
