Vegan Festival Adelaide to be held this weekend at Rymill Park

When body builder Sam Mussared says he’s a vegan, people don’t believe him. But he’s proved plants and muscles can go together.

You wouldn’t want to pick a fight with body builder Sam Mussared – but that doesn’t stop people calling him a liar.

The 32-year-old has been a vegan for five years but says many people refuse to believe him.

“I don’t go too much in people’s faces about it, I let my physicality do the talking,” he says.

Mr Mussared – a professional body builder – became a vegan because he no longer wanted to “contribute to the suffering of animals”.

But the diet change prompted a backlash from peers, who told him “it’s not right” and he would no longer be able to grow muscle, among other slurs.

“I used it as motivation to prove them wrong,” he says.

These days, the 32-year-old is often called a liar by people when he tells them he is vegan.

Mr Mussared, who owns The Base Transformations at Parafield with wife Michelle Richards, will speak at the Vegan Festival Adelaide at Rymill Park this weekend.

“Normally when I’m on a stage, I’m flexing my muscles, but this time I’ll be talking,” he says.

The festival will feature cooking demonstrations and more than 50 markets stalls. There will also be a Halloween disco for the kids from 5pm.

Last year’s festival attracted about 16,000 people but this year numbers will be capped at 5000 at any one time to meet COVID-19 restrictions.
