TALENTED school students are getting a head start on their university studies while still at school.

The increasingly popular programs include Headstart at the University of Adelaide, with 40 students this year, and Extension Studies at Flinders University, with 80 students (up from 56 last year).

University of Adelaide first year physics director Associate Professor Andrew MacKinnon says the Headstart scholarship program puts students in a “brilliant position” to pursue their interests with greater flexibility and more options.

Former Rostrevor College and Headstart student Tom Roocke, 19, says the “amazing program” has enabled him to do both computer science and physics in a single degree.

“I want to be a researcher using computers to help solve physics problems,” he said.

“I enjoy a good challenge.”
