A comedian caused widespread backlash after he told a controversial joke on national television on Tuesday.
But the wisecrack is actually not new, as it was told during a show at the Adelaide Fringe in 2017.
Comedian Reuben Kaye has landed himself in hot water after making an X-rated remark about Jesus on The Project but as it happens, the joke was part of his stand-up routine when he visited Adelaide almost six years ago.
The queer comic was speaking about the hate he receives for his sexuality, particularly from the Christian community, when he made the lewd remark.
“I love Jesus, I love any man who can get nailed for three days straight and come back for more,” Kaye joked.
Kaye made the comment to a crowd on stage at a comedy show while wearing a flamboyant pink outfit.
The audience response at the time was a mix of laughter and applause.
But the joke did not play as well on The Project as the following night host Waleed Aly apologised to viewers.
“We want to acknowledge the particular offence and hurt that it caused our Muslim and especially our Christian viewers,” he said.
“Obviously, I understand how profound that offence was.”
Fellow host Sarah Harris said live television can be “unpredictable” and added her reaction was not “considered” as it took her by surprise.
Kaye is back at the Adelaide Fringe this year with his show Live and Intimidating.
