Uber is offering between 10 per cent and 25 per cent off if it can match you with another passenger going the same way.
The “Pool Chance” initiative will spread nationally if it proves popular but began in Adelaide on Wednesday.
Uber driver Keith Seanard said the new system would encourage more people to use the service.
“I’m excited Pool Chance has launched in Adelaide as it will create more earning opportunities for drivers,’’ he said.
“We will be spending less time waiting in between trips and have more trips per hour. Plus getting more people in fewer cars will help cut congestion on Adelaide streets.” If Uber can’t match you with someone, you’ll just pay the standard UberX fare.
Uber spokesman Dom Taylor said the more people who could be matched on the trip, the bigger the savings on that trip.
“By sharing a ride, people can save between 10 per cent to 25 per cent on their trip, because more is saved as more is saved when more riders join their trip,’’ Mr Taylor said.
To celebrate the trial launch, until May 20, every person who gives Pool Chance a go will save 25 per cent even if they’re not paired with another rider.
If they are paired, they will also save the regular Pool Chance savings of at least another 10 per cent.
“At Uber, we’re passionate about helping people live car-free or car-light lifestyles, and helping drive sustainable transport forward,’’ Mr Taylor said.
Passenger Georgia Flinn, who tried the system yesterday said: “I think Pool Chance is a great opportunity to save some money, all whilst helping with traffic congestion and emissions. It’s a really fun and exciting new idea from Uber and it’s nice to meet others from your community”.
