A two-month-old baby has been punched in the face in a horrifying random attack outside a popular Mawson Lakes cafe in front of her distraught mother.

Police are now investigating and say a suspect has been identified.

Mother Elen Watson was sitting out the front of the Boatdeck Cafe on Wednesday with her sister and baby Ayla when the man ran up and punched the baby in the face.

The man then took off in a hurry with who Ms Watson believed was his carer.

Ms Watson described the incident as a “horrifying situation”.

“It has seriously made me scared to go out without my partner again,” she said.

“There were many people around and he had purposely targeted Ayla. This was such a horrifying situation.

“Both the carer and the individual left in a hurry, no follow ups or anything.”

SAPOL confirmed an investigation into the alleged attack had begun.

“Police are aware of an alleged assault on a baby that occurred in Mawson Lakes yesterday,” a SAPOL spokesperson said.

“The suspect has been identified and the matter is currently under investigation.”

Ms Watson took to Facebook on Wednesday to warn people about the shocking incident.

“I’m just wanting to post so this does not happen to anyone else and this sort of event can be avoided,” she said.

“Ayla is OK, we have just come back from the Women’s and Children’s.

“We are just trying our best to move forward from this. It has absolutely scarred me and I am just trying to process what has happened.

“Once again, thank you all for the support.”
