Two wandering wombats try to hitch ride to their Wombat Awareness Organisation home

WOMBATS Button and Gus are on the run and you can help them get home.

TWO escaped wombats are having second thoughts about life on the run and are trying to hitch a ride to their Hills home.

Button and Gus have reportedly been approaching cars and people since they escaped with three of their friends on Sunday night, after heavy rain brought down a tree on a fence at the Wombat Awareness Organisation at Flaxley.

The five wombats went for a walk but only three returned to the sanctuary on Monday.

Wombat Awareness Organisation founder Brigitte Stevens said the other two, Button and Gus – who have been at the sanctuary for two weeks – were having trouble finding their way home.

Ms Stevens has now had four reports of the wombats waddling up to people and cars looking for help.

One was last seen about 5km from the sanctuary, heading towards Macclesfield.

“They can travel over 15km in a night but, with so much rain and high grass, they’re avoiding going through,” Ms Stevens said.

“These kids are trying to find their way home.” Ms Stevens said the wombats would now be looking for shelter and may be hiding in a shed.

“If you are lucky enough to see our babies, please stay with them and call us,” she said. If you see the wombats, contact the Wombat Awareness Organisation on 0458 737 283.
