Police are urgently calling for motorists to be responsible amid a “concerning” horror weekend on South Australian roads that saw three lives lost.

A pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist were killed in three separate crashes over the weekend across the state.

On Sunday night, a 17-year-old male motorcyclist was killed in the Murraylands when he collided with a car at the intersection of Burdett Rd and Survey Rd in Pompoota, south of Mannum at about 8.30pm.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old Murray Bridge boy, was not injured, but he was taken to hospital for precaution. He was reported for aggravated driving without due care, and will appear in court at a later date.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Services Branch, said the three lives lost in 36 hours were “concerning”.

“They’re resulting from collisions that are totally avoidable, and the consequences for the families involved is catastrophic,” he said.

“My heart goes out to everybody involved in the recent fatalities on our roads, but clearly it is catastrophic for families, for work colleagues and for communities.”

Two hours before the crash involving the motorcyclist, at about 6.30pm, a pedestrian was found lying on the side of a Port Augusta road, and police believe he had been struck by a car and killed in a hit-run crash.

The 20-year-old man died at the scene.

Superintendent Gray said police are appealing for the driver of the hit-run incident to come forward.

“If you’re involved in a collision, you’ve got a statute responsibility to stop in any event,” he said.

“If you’re involved in a collision where somebody is seriously injured or worse, then it is inhumane for you not to stop and render assistance.”

The third death was Bernie Scanlan, a 69-year-old Norton Summit cyclist, who was killed on Saturday, about 90km south on the same road, the Augusta Highway, at Redhill.

Bernie was remembered as an “Aussie hero” who dedicated his life to giving what he could to those less fortunate.

A Ford Van towing a trailer collided with his bicycle about 3pm.

A 48-year-old Western Australia man was not injured in the crash.

Anyone with information on any of the crashes is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The fatalities take the total lives lost to 48, compared with 44 at the same time last year.

The 17-year-old Pompoota boy’s death was the 10th motorcyclist to lose his life this year.
