TWO dozen of South Australia's most notorious road accident black spots will be upgraded after the Federal Government approved a $5.5 million funding package.

The black spots in 21 local government areas have been the site of 125 accidents involving injuries as well as one death over the past five years.

Federal Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Keith Pitt said the funding had been approved after consultation with a local advisory panel.

“The Coalition Government is committed to making roads safer in South Australia and right across the nation,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Black Spot Program reduces fatal and injury crashes by 30 per cent — specifically targeting road locations with a history of crashes to deliver safety improvements such as road widening, increased lighting and signage, and installing traffic lights and roundabouts.’’

Mr Pitt made the announcement during a visit to Liberal MP Nicolle Flint’s electorate of Boothby, where an intersection at Grange Road and Sussex Terrace in Hawthorn will be upgraded to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

“We will work with the City of Mitcham to improve the intersection’s roundabout through installation of new pavement markings, mountable aprons for larger vehicles and safe storage areas for pedestrians,’’ Ms Flint said.

“The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has found that, on average, Black Spot projects reduce the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent.”

Liberal MP for Barker Tony Pasin, who chairs the SA black spot consultative panel, said the funding had been allocated to road locations that had been identified as high-priorities.
