Demolition of classrooms has begun at a Catholic school in Adelaide’s inner south, to make way for a new multistorey building.

A video posted by Cabra Dominican College to its Facebook page showed an excavator tearing down classroom walls to make way for its new multistorey learning facility.

The Cumberland Park school’s video was captioned “brick by brick, history has been built within these walls”.

“As we turn the page on this chapter of Cabra’s history, we do so with excitement for the future,” it said.

“What comes next will shape generations to come, driven by our culture of forward thinking and innovation.”

Cabra Dominican College principal Dr Helen Riekie shared details of the project in a video on its website.

The development, called the Aquinas Precinct Project, is part of stage two of the school’s masterplan.

The centre at the secondary school of about 1165 students was named after 13th century priest and philosopher Thomas Aquinas.

“The new Aquinas will be a dynamic education facility for all learners,” Dr Riekie said.

“This will be more than a building and it will redefine our presence to the broader community.

“A lot of work is underway to ensure continuity of quality of learning throughout the building process.”

Among its learning spaces, the building, which faces Cross Rd, will include multiple science classrooms.

The now-demolished Aquinas Centre had been a science hub for the school.

The project will also include “extensive landscaping at the front of the school and redeveloped parking areas.

A new auditorium with view of the school’s chapel will be part of the build to “increase our capacity for community and larger group gatherings”.

The build was expected to be completed in 2026.
