Tram breaks down on North Terrace and King William St, causing traffic chaos in Adelaide CBD

A TRAM that blocked King William St and North Terrace for hours has finally been towed clear of the busy intersection.

A TRAM that broke down on Adelaide’s busiest intersection has been towed clear after blocking traffic for about three hours.

A spokesman for the transport department said problems with the power supply to the tram were being investigated after it stopped at about 3.10pm, blocking North Terrace and King William St.

The broken was towed away by another tram at about 6pm but services between the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Victoria Square were not expected to resume tonight.

Traffic was being directed around the tram while the intersection is shut down.
Substitute buses will run from Victoria Square to the Entertainment Centre, while services from Glenelg to Victoria Square remain unaffected.

Drivers hoping to go west along North Terrace were forced to swing right towards Adelaide Oval.

The transport department spokesman said commuters should expect delays through the evening.
They could not say exactly when the tram would be operational again.
Frustrated tram passengers attempting to leave the CBD called the broken down tram “crap” and said they weren’t sure how to get home.

One woman said public transport options had to be more “reliable than this” in hot weather, and a man said the tram konked out earlier before it reached North Tce.

Others, however, weren’t so fussed by the delay and said their afternoon was a little more exciting because of the halt.
