Train drivers strike on Tuesday and Wednesday in Adelaide

Trains are operating again in Adelaide after a strike derailed the commute on Tuesday morning – but there’s more pain on Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know.

The Advertiser/7NEWS Adelaide: Adelaide Hills earthquake, Train drivers strike

Train services will come to a halt this week as more than 200 drivers take action over pay disputes against private contractor Keolis Downer Adelaide, with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union seeking a 20 per cent pay rise over four years after being offered a 14.7 per cent increase.

Services weren’t in action on Tuesday morning from first service until 9am but are now running again. However, there will be more disruption on Wednesday between 3pm and 7pm, as members from the union fight for better pay and working conditions.

Adelaide Metro had said it would try to limit the impact to train passengers, but the Department for Infrastructure and Transport said the timing of both actions during peak periods would see some bus services available.

“A small number of substitute bus services will be operating in close vicinity to train lines,” they said.

“Customers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative transport arrangements, including catching regular bus services, trams, organising a lift with family or friends or working from home where possible.

“Adelaide Metro will continue to keep customers informed of impacts to train services via all available channels.”

Last week, an Adelaide Metro train was vandalised with profanities during strike action from rail operators, with thousands of commuters impacted amid the industrial dispute.

On Thursday morning, one Adelaide Metro service was vandalised with furious graffiti over the strike, which read: ‘F*** your pay rise, drive the train rat”.

Sally Jackson, a commuter from Woodcroft, said the strike would “massively” impact her.

“My company has literally just moved into the city … Tomorrow will be my third day getting public transport and all of a sudden we can’t,” Ms Jackson said.

“I’m going to have to drive in tomorrow otherwise I won’t get to work in time. I’d rather not drive but I’ve got no choice.

“I understand why they are doing what they are doing but it is frustrating because we need to go to work as well.”

On Thursday last week, a Keolis Downer spokesperson said they “encourage the public to keep across Adelaide Metro’s website for specific service details, as well as to seek alternative transport as required.

“Keolis Downer Adelaide is currently in negotiation with employee representatives on a new Enterprise Agreement for our Adelaide Metro workforce.

“Keolis Downer respects the right of workers to take lawful industrial action in pursuit of their claims and remains committed to negotiating an agreed outcome.”

Passengers can call the Adelaide Metro Infoline on 1300 311 108 or visit the Adelaide Metro InfoCentre in the Adelaide Railway Station (both open 7am-8pm daily) with any inquiries.
