Speed limits on three regional roads that were so dodgy that they had to be dropped down to 100km/h have been lifted after a raft of improvements.
New limits of 110km/h have been applied to the first of eight roads that needed to undergo road maintenance to make them safe for the upper limit.
Roads with a lifted speed limit from today are:
CARPENTER Rocks Road from Carpenter Rocks to Mount Gambier.
GOYDER Highway from Crystal Brook to Gulnare.
Federal Infrastructure Minister Michael McCormack said yesterday that safety upgrades included shoulder sealing, audio-tactile line marking and the installation of safety barriers.
New state Transport Minister Corey Wingard said the speed limits were a key election promise.
“We promised to improve the safety of these roads and reintroduce the 110km/h speed limits and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” he said.
“We’re fixing 1000km of South Australia’s country roads over the next few years.”
“These are the first three of eight roads we’re going to lift the speed limit on and work is progressing well on the other five.”
Other roads to have their speed limits lifted to 110km/h by April 2021 are:
CLEVE Road from Cleve to Kimba
RIDDOCH Highway (Mt Gambier to Port MacDonnell)
NGARKAT Highway (Pinnaroo to Bordertown)
BROWNS Well Highway (Loxton to Pinnaroo)
CLAY Wells Road (Southern Ports Highway to Callendale).
