Crews worked to free at least one of the injured people.

A 32-year-old woman who was driving a Renault SUV, and her 55-year-old passenger, both of Devon Park, were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

A young boy also in the Renault was taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in a stable condition.

Seven News has reported that it is a mother, her young son, and his grandmother.

Two drivers were treated at the scene for minor injuries — a 57-year-old woman from Andrew Farm, who was driving a blue Commodore, and a man who was driving a truck, who were both taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital in stable conditions.

The MedSTAR helicopter arrived at the scene, but four patients were transferred to hospital by road ambulance.

Major Crash investigators visited the crash site.

The road was earlier closed to traffic in all directions but has reopened now.

Suzanne Wilson arrived on the scene a couple of minutes after the crash.

“I stopped to help. There was a lady sitting under a tree with a baby. The baby was quite distressed. It looked to be between nine and 12 months old,” she said.

“I believe the truck driver pulled the baby out of the car. The driver of the car was conscious, but the passenger was unconscious.

“It looked as if the passenger had sustained the worst injuries.”

Nearby resident Bob Kohler said the intersection was dangerous.

“There needs to be traffic lights, a roundabout — anything to make this intersection safer.”

Another resident, Chris Capewell, agreed the intersection was a crash black spot.

“There would be at least two crashes here a week,” he said.

“They have to do something about it.”

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said it was “saddening” that another accident had occurred at the intersection, which is under the care and control of the State Government.

“Traffic and Infrastructure (upgrades) and the installation of a roundabout at this location is dependent upon a land sales trigger point within the nearby housing development,” he said.

“The (council) is aware of the increasing vehicle collision rate at the intersection and has been lobbying (the transport department) to bring forward the roundabout installation.”

Police have appealed for witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
