A teenager accused of murder is set to be moved from Adelaide’s youth detention facility to an adult prison after a social worker was assaulted.
Northern District police have charged the 18-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, with assault cause harm after allegedly attacking the Adelaide Youth Training Centre worker on Sunday afternoon.
The teenager appeared in court on Monday charged over the attack on the staff member.
Appearing via video link, the teenager did not apply for bail and was remanded into custody. He will again appear in court in October.
The state government has asked for the accused to be moved from the Cavan facility in the northern suburbs to an adult prison for their own protection.
It is understood the teenager is accused of being part of the fatal CBD stabbing between warring gangs of African heritage over the Anzac Day long weekend, during which Ngor Bol, 25, died.
Operation Meld detectives allege the crime erupted between two feuding Sudanese youth gangs, 051 and KBS.
Police were called to the facility just before 2pm on Sunday following reports that the staff member was attacked in the face and spat on.
A colleague then took them to hospital for treatment, but their condition was unknown.
A spokeswoman for Human Services Minister Nat Cook, who had been in touch with staff, said the alleged perpetrator would be safest in an adult prison now he’s aged over 18.
Minister for Health Chris Picton said the government needed to take whatever measures necessary to keep corrections staff safe.
“Just like anybody else in our community, the staff who work in corrections or youth justice don‘t deserve to be assaulted,” he said.
“I‘m sure that there will be discussions underway at the moment between Youth Justice and the Department of Corrections in terms of what the appropriate measures would be in terms of any high risk person in our youth justice system.”
More than 200 arrests have been made in relation to Operation Meld, a specialist task force cracking down on youth gangs linked to a spate of stabbings that culminated in Mr Bol’s death.
