The second vehicle in a week has caught alight on the uptrack of the South-Eastern Freeway

For the second time this week, a car fire is slowing Freeway traffic to a crawl.

Vehicle fire on South Eastern Freeway

A car has burst into flames on the South-Eastern Freeway reducing traffic to one lane – the second vehicle fire on the busy thoroughfare this week.

Just after 2pm firefighters attended the South Eastern Freeway uptrack after the Heysen Tunnels near Crafers West to attend to a vehicle fire.

MFS crews did not take long to control the blaze, but were on the scene for 45 minutes. Police said traffic is restricted to one lane causing delays.

It is unknown if the vehicle has been cleared from the road.

The car that caught alight was a silver Holden combo van, police say.

The driver was reported to have been signalled by a witness that his tyres were on fire.

When he pulled over and began dousing the tyres with water, the fire spread to the rest of the vehicle.

An MFS spokeswoman said the car was a write-off.

The incident follows a truck fire on the South Eastern Freeway on Tuesday.

Just before 5pm a large flour truck was engulfed with flames on the up track of the Freeway causing heavy delays for southern commuters for around four hours. The driver of the truck was treated for smoke inhalation.

Hours before the incident, Federal MP Nicolle Flint vowed to “keep the fight” to get trucks and freight trains out of Adelaide suburbs and the hills after the State Government scrapped GlobeLink plans.

GlobeLink would have included a new freight airport near Monarto, and dual railroad lines linking to Port Adelaide. It was supported by Ms Flint in a bid to reduce heavy vehicle traffic in the Mayo electorate.
