Residents in southwest, northwest and southeast regions of SA are at the highest risk of being impacted by bushfires this spring season.

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) unveiled the Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for spring on Wednesday morning, with warnings that highlight increased bushfire risks for regions across Australia, including South Australia.

Areas near the WA, NT and Victoria borders in SA have been identified as high risk.

SA Country Fire Service Community Risk and Resilience director Alison May said there was an increased fire risk across the state this year because of the predicted hot and dry conditions.

Ms May said residents should also expect an early start to the fire season.

“The forecast is for hot and dry conditions in the months ahead and with that comes an increased a risk of fire,” Ms May said.

“With a forecasted hot and dry summer, it’s really important for people to prepare their properties by clearing your gutters, mowing lawns, removing flammable materials close to your home and removing fallen branches and other debris.

“People should also make or review their Bushfire Survival Plans for the upcoming Fire Danger Season.

“During the fire season, people should check the fire danger ratings each day and stay informed using multiple sources of emergency warning information, including subscribing to CFS warnings through our website, and downloading the Alert SA App.”

AFAC chief executive Rob Webb said climate influences driving increased risk of bushfire this season were widespread.

Mr Webb said it was important for Australians to be alert to local risks of bushfire over the coming months, regardless of their location.

“Wherever you live, work or travel, now is the time to plan and prepare,” he said.

“Understand your risk, know where you will get your information, and talk to your family about what you will do.”
