The RAA wants the state government to guarantee apps which check fuel prices

Adelaide petrol prices are the lowest of all capitals in the past two quraters - the RAA says apps which find the cheapest petrol near you should be permanent.

Real time fuel pricing app

The RAA wants the winner of the March 2022 state election to make a trial real-time fuel pricing scheme permanent.

RAA fuel expert Mark Borlace said that by next year’s election, the trial would have run for a year and it is already proved to have worked.

“We know the scheme is popular; we have had more than two million fuel price searches on our free myRAA app in the nine months since the scheme began and our survey showed motorists using our app were saving almost $30 a month on unleaded petrol,’’ he said.

The scheme enables motorists to find the cheapest priced fuel in their neighbourhood or on their driving journey by using one of many apps on the market, which are fed with government-guaranteed information within 30 minutes of a price change.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s petrol monitoring report this month found average retail prices in Adelaide were lowest of all state capital in the past two quarters.

It found the introduction of real-time fuel price transparency “appears to have had a positive impact in Adelaide as retail prices at the peak of many price cycles were noticeably lower after the scheme commenced’’.

“In the last two quarters, retail prices at the peak of the price cycle were noticeably lower than in earlier quarters,’’ the report released this month says.
