Adelaide weather: storms bring thunder, lightning, power cuts
POWER has been restored to most homes after about 18,500 lightning strikes hit the state, blacking out thousands of properties.
THOUSANDS of homes were left without power as thunderstorms lashed parts of South Australia on Tuesday evening.
At its peak early on Tuesday evening more than 9000 properties across the state suffered outages.
Power was cut to 3300 properties in Pasadena, Tonsley, St Marys, Mitchell Park and Clovelly Park.
Henley Beach, Fulham Gardens, Kidman Park and Lockleys were also plunged into darkness.
While on the Yorke Peninsula, power outages affected 3829 properties in towns including Port Vincent, Minlaton, Yorketown.
SA Power Networks determined that some of the outages had been caused by lightning strikes.
Power was reconnected to some properties as early as 10pm in suburban Adelaide areas while other areas had to wait until about 1am.
Heavy winds and thunderstorms brought rain with Adelaide’s CBD receiving 6mm in the last 24 hours, Kadina 12mm and Clare 4mm.
Around 18,500 lightning strikes were recorded across the state in the previous 24 hours, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
"Most of them were over the southern part of the state as that trough moved across during the late afternoon and evening time," senior forecaster Simon Timcke told ABC radio.
Adelaide is heading for a top of 19C on Wednesday with a slight chance of a shower.
