The ending of Dark City

The Dark City in question is not a city, but exists on a giant disc floating in space. Yep, that sounds absurd, but the moment this is revealed is just awesome.

The Strangers are alien beings who kidnapped a whole load of humans, and now imprint new memories on them each ‘night’ as their huge machines periodically rearrange the city and they seek to understand humanity.

John woke as his new identity was being imprinted upon his mind — that of a murderer.

The Strangers can’t handle sunlight, so the giant disc on which the city sits always faces away from the sun. There’s more, but that’s the basic overview.
