A teenager, her grandmother and nine mastiff puppies have escaped an inferno that broke out at their home north of Adelaide in the early hours of this morning.

Jaziah Holland‘s grandmother woke to the sound of the smoke alarm at her Two Wells home on Glover Rd just after 2.30am.

“I didn’t wake up straight away, the sound (of the alarm) went through my dream as I was sleeping,” Ms Holland, 19, told The Advertiser.

“And then my nan opened the door and said ‘the house is on fire’ – I got up straight away, it was scary.”

Ms Holland said she ran straight to her litter of 10 mastiff puppies. She managed to save nine of them, but one perished in the blaze.

“I only took my phone and my puppies – that’s it.” Ms Holland said.

“One unfortunately died, because the room was pitch black, we couldn’t see anything in there.”

She said her bedroom was completely gutted, destroying priceless personal effects.

A CFS spokeswoman said the fire was started by a running clothes dryer.

About 20 volunteers rushed to the scene, but the home could not be saved. The damage bill is estimated at $200,000.

“The CFS really wants to remind everyone, smoke alarms do save lives and we encourage you to check yours as we head into winter,” the spokeswoman said.
