A TAXI driver has been found guilty of causing the death of a man and injuring three others in a road smash in the Adelaide Hills.

Bo Xi Li had pleaded not guilty to one count of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing harm over the head-on crash between his car and a van on North East Rd at Houghton in October 2012.

Li, 30, admitted his poor driving had caused the death of the van driver, 68-year old Trevor Bird, but claimed his actions had constituted driving without due care rather than the more serious charge of dangerous driving.

The crash also left Mr Bird’s partner Timea Dixon with serious injuries to her ribs, pelvis and ankle.

Prosecutors told the jury Li was driving at 104km/h in an 80km/h zone when his blue Mitsubishi Lancer crossed onto the wrong side of the road and hit Mr Bird’s vehicle.

Li was not working as a taxi driver at the time and was driving his own blue Mitsubishi Lancer home from an afternoon in the Barossa Valley with friends.

The court heard Li told police after the crash that he was driving at between 85-90 km/h at the time of the crash, but that an Airbag Control Module inside the car had confirmed his speed at 104km/h.

After a trial lasting five days, the jury deliberated for almost five hours before returning a majority guilty verdict on all counts.

Li was remanded on continuing bail to face court for sentencing submissions next week.
