Strong, destructive wind warning for SA and Adelaide

Strong, destructive winds are forecast to strike across a huge part of SA today, with thunderstorms about to dump a bucket.

Weather To Watch

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of all districts of South Australia, with locally destructive winds expected to hit the state late Tuesday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has the warning, saying the gusty front would initially hit the western coast districts before moving across central districts later on Tuesday.

Senior forecaster Jenny Horvat said metropolitan Adelaide could see winds up to 110km/h in the late afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms expected.

Ms Horvat said there is currently heavy shower activity in the South East and Kangaroo Island, which will move across to Adelaide in coming hours.

“We’re really looking at that intensifying this evening,” she said.

“All up for the Adelaide Plains … you could see up to 10mm.”

She said temperatures would remain cool for the rest of the week, with Wednesday forecast to reach 14C, and remain at 13C over the weekend.

Hail is expected on Friday and Saturday morning.

“So it will be a cold winter weekend … winter isn’t over yet, and the cold temperatures are still hanging about.”

The SES is on high alert and warned people to clear loose object from their properties in preparation for the wind.

The SES’ Jon Carr said people should avoid parking under trees overnight.

“We are expecting quite a few trees to come down,” he said.

A marine wind warning was also issued for South Australia, and Mr Carr said people should be careful near jetties and coastal fringes.

A statewide code blue has been activated for people sleeping rough who need additional shelter overnight.

South Australians sleeping rough can seek help tonight at:

• Westcare (Baptist Care SA) will be open Tuesday for overnight accommodation. The Westcare Centre is located at 11/19 Millers Ct Adelaide.

• Street to Home will be offering additional outreach services to people sleeping rough on Tuesday.
