Strike teams and water bombers to battle out of control Kersbrook fire

An out of control fire in Kersbrook has been contained after water bombers and strike teams scrambled to battle the blaze.

A fire sparked by a tree falling onto power lines in the Adelaide Hills has been contained as a cool change swept across the state.

The Country Fire Service declared an emergency warning for the Kersbrook fire yesterday evening but later downgraded to an advice message about 1.35am on Saturday.

The fire broke out around 7.30pm on Watts Gully Rd during a day of extreme bushfire conditions.

The CFS hoped the blaze, which burned deep vegetation, would be controlled by the end of Saturday.

The forest fire was initially burning in a south-easterly direction towards Cromer and Forreston.

The warning was later expanded to include Mount Crawford, Mount Pleasant, Birdwood and Springton.

The fire burnt 18ha south of Watts Gully Rd and west of Deloraine Rd near the Warren Conservation Park and Mount Crawford.

No damage or loss of property has been reported so far.

Waterbomber aircraft responded quickly to the blaze, dropping 21 loads in just over an hour, buying valuable time as CFS units from the surrounding district rushed to the scene.

Strike teams were called to the area to combat the expanding fire zone with 150 firefighters on the frontline with 25 fire trucks, four water bulk carriers and two heavy plant machines.

Mineral earth breaks were made to stop the forward halt of the fire but it was expected to burn for several more days.

Further crews were scheduled for an early morning start to relieve the fatigued crews operating in the fire ground.

At 8.45pm on Friday, the water bombers were called off the fire because of failing light.

The Kersbrook fire was burning only kilometres from where the Cudlee Creek fire begun on December 20.
