Former Liberal leader Isobel Redmond has vowed to keeping fighting to have the private Stirling Community Hospital remain in its location, amid fears it will be shifted to Mount Barker.

The hospital’s future is in doubt over an estimated $50m bill to bring it up to modern health codes.

A public meeting on October 23 will hear updates on the future of the facility which dates to 1927.

Ms Redmond served on the hospital board for 22 years and was shocked to hear about possible plans to move it.

“My reaction was, over my dead body,” she said.

“The board is not entitled to sell it – we need to keep it in Stirling

“Hopefully the meeting on the 23rd will find a path towards a viable, ongoing long term future at its current site.

“We need to figure out a long term future for the hospital.”

Officials have previously said relocating in the Adelaide Hills would be the preferred option, with a new building at a cost estimated around $12m.

The hospital released a statement saying no final decision had been made about the future location of Stirling Hospital.

“The Board of Stirling Hospital remains committed to doing everything possible to stay at its current location, which is why it has developed a Masterplan and has sought advice from expert consultants,” it states.

“Over recent months, the Board has been actively listening to feedback from the local community, and a number of meetings have occurred – and continue to occur – with healthcare, accreditation, construction and fundraising experts.

“The Hospital has also been in discussions with local community groups, specialists, GPs, residents and local businesses to understand their views.

“Our focus is on continuing to provide a local private hospital service for the broader Adelaide Hills community and explore all options before any final decision is made.”
