Shopfronts on Rundle Mall have been targeted by racist vandals on the first day of NAIDOC Week.
Small, round stickers bearing the name and symbol of neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network were placed on shops and phone booths on Monday morning.
One sticker read “we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children”, while another read “white revolution is the only solution”. Others contained the group’s flag alongside the Australian flag.
The Adelaide City Council quickly deployed its public realm team to remove the stickers.
Premier Steven Marshall and police commissioner Grant Stevens condemned the “racist” act.
“To see this sort of thing appear is inappropriate and very offensive,” Mr Stevens said.
Opposition Aboriginal Affairs spokesman Kyam Maher said it was a disappointing start to a week that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“It’s extremely disappointing and upsetting on a week where we celebrate tens of thousands of years of Australia’s rich Aboriginal history and culture to see these sorts of attitudes being publicly displayed,” he said.
“Australia is a remarkable multicultural community and I think these sorts of public displays have no place here.”
Mr Maher urged the government to investigate whether there was any legal course of action to ensure those who distributed the stickers are held to account.
“It doesn’t reflect who we are, it doesn’t reflect who the community is,” he said.
Rundle Mall general manager Johanna Williams said authorities acted promptly to remove the material.
“The stickers placed in Rundle Mall are offensive,” she said.
“As soon as we were made aware of the stickers, they were removed by City of Adelaide’s public realm team.”
Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the stickers were “not acceptable in our city” and were removed as quickly as possible.
“Our city should be a safe and welcoming place for everyone and it is particularly disappointing to have these appear as we celebrate NAIDOC Week in the city this week,” she said.
“The City of Adelaide does not tolerate racism or vandalism and our team is reviewing CCTV vision in conjunction with SA Police to try and track down those responsible.”
The National Socialist Network is a far right neo-Nazi group that has vowed to bring about a “white revolution”.
The group last year confirmed it was active in Adelaide and posted a picture of eight of its local members performing the Nazi salute.
