States have to answer for Stolen Generation: survivor

Aboriginal South Australians taken from their families will receive another $10,000 in compensation from the State Government.

Premier Steven Marshall told Parliament on Tuesday that the Government would invest the more than $3 million left in the former Labor government’s Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme by giving 312 South Australians a further $10,000.

Three hundred and thirty two offers of compensation had originally been made, but 312 were accepted.

Those applicants had originally been given a $20,000 individual payment by the former government.

“The Government believes this is the fairest way to allocate the remaining funding,” Mr Marshall said.

“In our generation we acknowledge the hurt, the devastation and the wrongs of removal and offer some closure to those removed.”

Aboriginal elders blasted the original compensation in early 2018 as “disgusting and unworthy”.
