NO date has been revealed for when cars can use the Torrens to Torrens upgrade of South Rd, despite an open day to thank the community for its patience.

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll on Sunday attended the community open day, which provided rare public access to the $801 million building site.

He said the State Government was “very, very close” to announcing when cars would be allowed on the road.

The upgrade will deliver a 4km non-stop roadway, including 3km of lowered road to give motorists a traffic light-free ride from the River Torrens to Torrens Rd. Thousands of motorists are expected to use it every day, saving up to seven and a half minutes.

“This is something that’s been years in the making, and I’d like to thank the community for their patience,” Mr Knoll said.

“We are very, very close to an opening. We are just making sure that we cross off the last few bits and pieces.”

Mr Knoll was hesitant to set an opening date in stone, saying factors outside the Government’s control including weather could affect the project’s completion.

Work remains to be done on asphalt and connection points.

Mr Knoll said the new Government was spending a record amount on infrastructure, including a further South Rd upgrade between Regency Rd and Pym St.

Opposition Leader Peter Malinuaskas said it was “the end of an era as the former Labor Government’s investment into projects such as the Torrens to Torrens wind up”.

He warned of a “valley of death” for construction jobs in SA.

“Infrastructure creates jobs and economic activity, while boosting productivity and economic growth,” he said.
