St Peters boy in Kia busted performing burnout at Norwood in front of police

A St Peters P-plater has been caught performing a burnout right in front of a police car at Norwood on Wednesday night.

A Kia sedan driven by a teenager was busted performing a five-second burnout at Norwood.

Police patrolling George St about 7pm heard loud revving and the screech of tyres coming from nearby.

The white Kia then turned out of Webbe St onto George St and, spectacularly in front of police, allegedly performed a five-second burnout that produced smoke and left a single black mark on the road.

Its driver, a P-plater St Peters boy, 17, was pulled over.

Police noticed two passengers in the rear of the car, a breach of his provisional licence conditions.

He was reported for misuse of a motor vehicle and had his car impounded for 28 days. The boy will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

He was also issued an expiation note for breaching his provisional licence conditions.

It follows a report last month that shows record numbers of hoon drivers are being caught at staggering speeds.

SA Police figures analysed by the RAA show 5410 leadfoot motorists were detected at speeds of 45km/h or more above the limit on the state’s roads between July 2015 and June 2021.

Road safety authorities have denounced the unacceptable and shameful behaviour, which has increased 41.7 per cent over the seven-year period and cost drivers almost $4.7m in fines.

A further 1113 motorists whose driving was considered so dangerous as to warrant more than a fine and nine demerit points were arrested or reported in the past three financial years.

Tough new anti-hoon laws, which came into effect in late 2021, will result in motorists who drive at excessive or extreme speeds facing jail and increased licence disqualifications.

Meanwhile, a P-plater was also nabbed by police over a crash at Marion Bay last year.

The single car rollover happened at 2.15pm on December 30 on the Yorke Hwy, but blood sample results have recently been returned to police.

At the time, the Eden Hills boy, 17, was treated at hospital for minor injuries and was fined $200 for failing to keep his car on a sealed surface.

Police have now fined the boy $1344 for drug driving and breaching licence conditions, after cannabis was allegedly found to be in his blood at the time of the crash.
