South Rd at Melrose Park to be resurfaced in May ahead of work on Torrens to Darlington project

Brace yourself for more delays on South Rd in the next few months as a busy stretch gets resurfaced ahead of major works for the River Torrens to Darlington project.

Torrens to Darlington flyover

A busy stretch of South Rd will be resurfaced over coming months ahead of major works for the River Torrens to Darlington project.

Work will begin in May on a 3km section between Glengarry Ave, Glandore, and Bennet Ave, Melrose Park.

Later this year work will be done between Daws Rd and Lloyd St, St Marys, and Ashley St, Torrensville to Sir Donald Bradman Drive.

The resurfacing, including removing the existing pavement and replacing it with asphalt, will be done at night to minimise disruption to motorists.

It is expected to be complete by the end of June, weather permitting.

Speed and lane restrictions will be in place while works are happening but all lanes of South Rd are planned to be open when workers are not on site.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said people who used South Rd regularly “know how in dire need it is of a freshen up”.

“This is the busiest road in South Australia, it gets a lot of traffic, it gets a lot of damage done,” he said.

Mr Koutsantonis said the resurfacing would make the arterial route “as smooth and comfortable and safe as possible for motorists”.

Last December, the state government finally revealed its new, $15.4bn design for the Torrens to Darlington project. See the designs.
