Shorten critical of government NDIS implementation

THE roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in South Australia has been delayed, affecting about 4000 people.

State Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink described the setback as “disappointing” but reassured those affected that current funding would remain.

The National Disability Insurance Agency made the announcement on its website on Wednesday — and gave no new time frame on the roll out due for completion mid-year.

A statement said the delay was to ensure proper planning and that more than 15,000 participants had approved plans in SA.

“This is something to celebrate, with a large numbers of participants gaining access to supports they have never received before, sparking new growth and innovation in a diverse and thriving market,” the statement said.

“However, due to a number of factors including the challenge of identifying appropriate Partners in the Community to support planning outcomes at the required pace, the transition of State and Commonwealth clients will take longer than originally scheduled.”

Ms Lensink said “The Marshall Liberal Government will maintain current funding arrangements for people affected by the delay until they receive their NDIS plan.”

Disability Advocacy & Complaints Service of SA CEO Kendall Field said it was good the agency had acknowledged the importance of face-to-face meetings and high quality planning.

“Getting the plan right is in the best interest of both parties,” Ms Field told The Advertiser.
