From chauffeured vehicles to golf courses and wellness centres, we have uncovered what makes some of South Australia’s best retirement villages stand out from the pack.

Anyone who thinks getting old isn’t fun clearly isn’t aware of what is on offer at some of the state’s best retirement villages.

From stepping out your front door on to a golf course, to wellness centres, bowling greens, indoor pools and rooftop gardens, many centre’s have taken retirement living to a new level.

One village even boasts a chauffeured vehicle to transport its residents.

To help you choose where to spend your best days, we have taken a look at some of SA’s fanciest retirement villages, and found out what makes them stand out from the pack.

On Statenborough at Leabrook

Located in one of Adelaide’s finest heritage suburbs, apartments are set amid magnificent water gardens adjoining Second Creek, age-old trees and stately, contemporary architecture. The village offers a range of services, including a fully-licensed clubhouse and a chauffeured limousine. Activities include a heated pool and gym, organised outings, many clubs including bridge, Mahjong and craft, a wellness centre and indoor golf with a state-of-the-art golf simulator. Prices start at $399,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.

U City’s Retirement Residences

This 20-storey mixed-use development opened in the heart of the city in August 2019. It has 41 retirement residences, with either one, two or three bedrooms, on its upper six floors. Come March this year, 29 of the apartments will be occupied. Residents have exclusive access to an indoor-outdoor club lounge, and can also use U City’s community facilities, including gym equipment, exercise classes and the Inbari Ku Community Space. The building is also home to other services, including short and long-term disability accommodation, Uniting Communities’ social services hub, cafes and Respect Dental. U City has a focus on sustainability – the building received 6-star Greenstar accreditation during its build, and is predicted to use 45 per cent less energy and 30 per cent less water than a comparable new building. Apartments start at $435,000 for one bedroom, up to $860,000 for three bedrooms.

Copper Coast Lifestyle Village

This retirement village located in North Moonta has a bowling green, games room, function space with commercial kitchen, on-site hair salon, library, gym and indoor heated swimming pool and spa. Residents can enjoy yoga, table tennis, craft groups, regular happy hours and social club functions. Close to the beach, medical facilities and cafes, Copper Coast Lifestyle Village has two and three-bedroom villas with prices started at $200,000.

Southern Cross Care

Myrtle Bank is home to two luxury retirement villages run by Southern Cross Care. Carmelite, at 7 Spence Avenue, is part of an integrated retirement and aged care development that won four state and national Urban Development Institute of Australia awards in 2019-2020. It has a café, pool, health and wellness centre, hairdresser, community centre and native gardens. The 38 modern apartments have video intercoms, balconies and secure undercroft parking. In-home care services are also available. Nearby, The Waterford village, at 16 Cross Road, sits surrounded by heritage stone buildings and a chapel. It has 51 apartments and a community centre, café, spa, gym, theatre, library and hairdresser. It also offers in-home care services. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom and single garage apartment is currently for sale for $649,500.

Living Choice Flagstaff Hill

This one is for all the golf lovers out there. It is SA’s first fully integrated golf course and retirement community, being developed on Memford Way. You can step out your front door and be on Flagstaff Hill Golf Course. There are 42 villas with courtyard gardens and 107 apartments. The villas, which come in four designs and include either two or three bedrooms, are currently under construction. The garages are big enough to fit a car and a golf buggy. Construction of the first apartment building – The Range – is expected to start soon. It will include 17 apartments built over three storeys. The existing golf clubhouse will be demolished to make way for a new five-storey building. The Club will feature a members lounge and bar, dining area, heated pool, gym, wellness centre and two golf simulators. Twenty one apartments will be built on the upper levels, including three penthouses. Villas are available from $519,900 for a two-bedroom and $615,900 for a three-bedroom. Apartments start from $369,900 for a one-bedroom, $639,900 for a two-bedroom and $669,900 for a three-bedroom.

Resthaven Port Elliot

Located at 52 North Terrace, this retirement village is a short distance from Horseshoe Bay and offers four modern, two-bedroom, cottage-style units. Resthaven services are on offer in the adjacent old Port Elliot School building, including a variety of group programs, and in-home help is available. The units each feature a secure garage and rear patio. Resthaven offers retirement living on a licence-to-occupy basis, refunding the balance of the entry contribution on exit. Unit 1 in the row is currently available for $390,000.

Ashbrook Apartments Retirement Village

The Ashbrook, at Syme St, Ashford, boasts its own cinema, sports bar, dining room, several recreation areas and a rooftop garden and outdoor barbecue area with panoramic views. It is located close to Ashford Hospital, and its 96 apartments are a mix of stately elegance and modern conveniences, each with a private balcony. Two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments start from $450,000.

Aldinga Shores Lifestyle

“The Shores” is located between the beaches of Aldinga Bay and the McLaren Vale wine district. The club house and surrounds make up the village’s main social hub. The village is pet friendly and has two and three-bedroom homes with individual garaging and private yards. A two-bedroom resale unit is currently available at $249,500. The village’s next stage of construction has now begun and is expected to be finished in early July, this year.

ECH Encore Apartments

Encore Apartments is a new six-storey vertical ECH retirement village being built at Smart Road, Modbury, which includes two-bedroom apartments all with private balconies as well as an onsite café, fitness centre and community garden. A Montessori Early Learning Centre will also be located on the site, providing opportunities for intergenerational activities. The village is located directly opposite Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, Hoyts cinema and the O’Bahn, while health and wellness services including Modbury Hospital and Paragon Swim are nearby. Estimated completion late 2021. A two-bedroom apartment starts from $215,000.

ECH Burton Village

Located at 215 Bolivar Road, Burton, ECH Burton Village is pet-friendly and offers small courtyard homes with modern open plan living with a single garage under the main roof. Village facilities include a community centre and manicured gardens – all within close proximity to public transport and the Springbank Plaza Shopping Centre. The newly refurbished two-bedroom and three-bedroom units have hardwood flooring throughout, a large private rear yard, separate laundry and second toilet. Cost is $269,000 for a two-bedroom unit, and $290,000 for a three-bedroom unit, both with a 75 per cent refund after five years.
