Plans for a $49.5m dedicated headquarters for the South Australian Sports Institute have been lodged with the state’s planning authority, as the organisation celebrates its 40th year.
The three-storey building, on Railway Tce at Mile End, would provide high-performance athletes with access to state-of-the-art training facilities and integrated technologies.
The development application, lodged with PlanSA, includes offices, a multi-use court, lecture theatres, physiotherapy rooms, gyms, recovery pools and saunas, and a cafe.
The building would be home to the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing, as well as SASI and a tertiary education tenant to provide allied health and human performance courses.
A total of 101 full-time staff, up to 110 visiting athletes and 325 students are expected to use the site from Monday to Friday.
The previous Liberal government committed $49m in 2021-22 towards constructing the new facility, next to the Athletics SA stadium.
For the past 22 years, SASI has operated out of a Kidman Park site, which was found to be “outdated” and in “poor condition”, and limits SASI from “delivering world-class high-performance training”.
The Kidman Park site also doesn’t provide optimum access for Paralympic athletes, weight training and aerobic facilities are at capacity during peak times.
The new five-star green building would stand 18m-high, requiring a referral to the Adelaide Airport for consideration, however preliminary advice was that it would not raise any aviation concerns.
The development would see 146 trees removed to be supplemented by 160 new tree plantings and additional shrubs.
The application is out for public consultation until December 13.
