South Australian motorsport fans furious over axing of annual Superloop 500 race

SA motorsport fans have expressed anger over this week’s shock decision to axe the annual Adelaide 500 car race.

Not-so-super feeling as Adelaide Superloop 500 gets axed

During the first Clipsal 500 race in 1999, Randy Neos “only” attended one day.

But his record since has been unblemished, attending every day of every annual race. He is among the dedicated fans furious at the State Government’s decision to axe the event, despite it attracting more than 200,000 people annually.

“This has annoyed the crap out of me,” Mr Neos said.

“There is a lot more to it, I reckon, but we don’t know yet. The rumour of the Formula E (electric racing cars) coming here is one thing, but that is not going to take off in Adelaide.”

For Mr Neos, the loss of the Superloop 500 Supercars V8 race was just another blow after the closure of his much-loved Holden factory in Elizabeth. While he has been to Supercars V8 races at the new Tailem Bend track, he said they did not measure up to the famous Adelaide street circuit. “This race decision, they are hiding behind the COVID-19 as an excuse for getting rid of it,” he said.

“They are hiding behind the Supercars’ popularity declining, but it is totally not true. There have been people wanting to get rid of it for years, despite the success.

“Forget the fans, the jobs that were associated with this, the race and the infrastructure for South Australia were huge.”
