South Australian drivers rate the state’s most dangerous roads and intersections in RAA survey

THE roads and intersections that South Australian drivers have rated as the state’s most dangerous have been revealed in a survey by the RAA.

THE roads and intersections that South Australian drivers have rated as the state’s most dangerous have been revealed in a survey by the RAA.

The motoring body’s Risky Road survey found the stretch of Main South Rd from Noarlunga to Myponga is considered the least safe for driving.

RAA road safety senior manager Charles Mountain said concerns were “raised about its uneven surface, narrow lanes and a lack of overtaking lanes’’.

“Traffic volumes have been steadily increasing along this route as the urban sprawl has moved into areas such as Seaford and Aldinga, and road users feel it needs to be upgraded to meet demand,’’ he said.

In some good news for drivers, the intersection voted the worst — the Oaklands Rail Crossing at the intersection of Diagonal and Morphett roads — was earmarked for an underpass on Wednesday.

The state and federal government announced an agreement to build a $174 million rail underpass that will address decades of concerns over the crossing, at the intersection of Diagonal and Morphett roads in Oaklands Park.

“In the case of Oaklands Rail Crossing, respondents highlighted its confusing layout, and inadequate crossing or turning opportunities,’’ Mr Mountain said.

Many of the almost 3000 nominations included Adelaide’s arterial roads and extended into regional areas including the Limestone Coast, Clare Valley, and Yorke Peninsula.

“Many of the roads nominated provide links to key tourist destinations, taking travellers through the most picturesque parts of the state,” he said.

“With uneven surfaces, pot holes, narrow lanes, crumbling road edges and a lack of overtaking lanes, these roads are in need of attention to ensure the safety of all road users.”

The nominations made in the Risky Roads survey highlights motorists desire to see major roads and intersections upgraded to improve safety for all road users.

Mr Mountain said the RAA would liaise with the relevant authorities that maintain each of the roads that have been highlighted by the survey.

Meanwhile, Federal Transport Minister Darren Chester has announced the next round of black spot funding in SA would involve 24 road upgrades worth $5.47 million.

These locations, across 14 local government areas, have been the site of with six fatal and 112 injury cashes.

The largest project is a $1.52 million upgrade to the Sturt Hwy and Holder Top Rd T-junction at Waikerie.

“The Australian Government knows the difference safer roads make to the community and these ‘black spot’ roads will be substantially improved over the next 12 months,” Mr Chester said.

“On average completed Black Spot road projects reduce fatalities and injuries by 30 per cent.”

The RAA, Motor Accident Commission and SA Road Transport Associations are among the black spot panel which examines the nominations for funding.
