South Australians are being urged to prepare for a stormy weather burst on Thursday, with rain and possibly damaging winds on the way.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a very high chance of showers in the city on Thursday morning, while severe weather warnings are in place for parts of the West Coast and Lower Eyre Peninsula regions.
Residents there are warned to brace for damaging wind gusts up to 90km/h. Towns likely to cop the brunt include Port Lincoln, Elliston and Streaky Bay.
The bureau says a low pressure system near Kangaroo Island will continue to move northeast over SA on Thursday, bringing gusty showers and possible thunderstorms with it.
Overnight on Wednesday, 7.6mm of rain was recorded in Adelaide, with higher falls in the Mount Lofty Ranges including 28mm at Piccadilly.
Falls up to 23mm have been recorded on the Lower Eyre Peninsula, up to 16mm in the state’s South East, up to 10mm on Kangaroo Island and 5-7mm over the Mid North.
“[It’s expected to be] quite a wet (Wednesday) evening and into (Thursday) morning, but for the most part clearing up tomorrow,” the bureau’s community information spokeswoman Morgan Pumpa said.
Ms Pumpa urged those in Port Lincoln, Elliston and Streaky Bay to be ready.
“We haven’t quite reached the amounts with the damaging wind gusts of 90km/h, but it’s still possible for the Eyre Peninsula,” she said.
“It’s still really important that for anyone who has anything outside within those areas … just to make sure things are secure within their backyard, back porch and front porch … just to make sure that it doesn’t get the chance of blowing away even though we haven’t seen those damaging wind strengths just yet.”
Conditions are expected to ease by early Thursday afternoon.
The bureau has also issued a marine wind warning for parts of the state, including the Upper West Coast and Lower West Coast where a gale warning is current, and the Far West Coast where a strong wind warning is current.
Weather conditions will ease on Friday and over the weekend, with the chance of little rain forecast and maximum temperatures of 15-16C in Adelaide.
