South Australia and Western Australia shark attack map

South Australia suffered its first attack in a number of years at Kangaroo Island last week but Western Australia has had a horror year with three deaths due to sharks in 2020.

Bite Club was set up by Dave Pearson after he was attacked by a shark at Crowdy Head in 2011

With sharks prevalent along the coastlines of both South Australia and Western Australia shark attacks are not uncommon.

There have been three fatailites in Western Australia this year with Charles Cernobori the most recent when he was killed by a bull shark while bodyboarding at Cable Beach. It follows the death of surfer Andrew Sharpe in October and scuba diver Gary Johnson in January.

Attacks had dropped off in South Australia from the early part of the decade, the last fatality Sam Kellett back in 2014.

There had not been a recorded attack since 2017 until the first weekend of December this year, when a surfer at Kangaroo Island was mauled and he needed to be airlifted to Adelaide.
