“Christmas won’t be the same”.
That is the message from South Australians after news broke lolly legend Smyth’s Confectionery will be closing its doors.
Founded in 1910, the beloved sweets manufacturer is best-known for it’s Christmas Mixture lolly bag.
However, its current factory site on South Rd will be bulldozed in June to open up an additional lane as part of the Torrens to Darlington project.
The Advertiser’s original story on the closure attracted more than 700 comments from disappointed locals.
“How can we enjoy future Christmases without these?” Wendy Warren asked.
“Oh they are a big favourite in my house hold at Christmas time … They need to build a new factory somewhere in Adelaide, maybe the northern suburbs,” said Christina Addabbo.
Willy Gregory chimed in: “Maybe if the company were interested we all put in money to help them relocate. It certainly will be a great investment for us all.”
Supermarket owner John-Paul Drake also posted a video review of the Christmas Mixture on social media, saying it’s “no wonder we sell millions of them”.
Andrea Lomas, owner of The Old Lolly Shop at the Adelaide Central Market, said her shop has stocked Smyth’s products since opening 25 years ago.
“They’re not the sort of lollies that other companies are necessarily making, so it will definitely be a big loss,” Ms Lomas said.
“Their almond milk rock would be our biggest seller of theirs and the most iconic, which no one else makes, so I think a lot of people will be sad to see it go.”
A government spokesman said Department for Infrastructure and Transport has been in discussions with the business about potential options, including relocation.
“It is always our preference to assist businesses to relocate where possible,” the spokesman said.
“A final offer in relation to this business has not yet been made as we are working through their claim and awaiting requested information.
“Any other decisions made in relation to this business are a matter for the business owner to comment on.”
The 3500sq/m Smyth’s factory on South Rd has set a tentative closing date for June next year but will operate at full production until then.
