Sonny Sumner tributes after he died in police custody on Saturday

A man who died in police custody is being remembered by dozens of friends and relatives for more than his violent past.

Heartbroken friends and relatives of a man who died while in police custody have remembered him as being one of a kind.

Sonny Terry Sumner, 32, died on Saturday night from stab wounds he told police were self inflicted at Craigmore.

At the time of his death Sumner was wanted over an earlier hit-run crash at Andrews Farm and had a history of crime dating back to 2010.

Police and paramedics rushed to St Lawrence Ave about 3pm Saturday after reports of a fight, where they found a man, 26, had been hit by a Toyota Prado suspected of being stolen.

About six hours later police attended a home at Karinga Ave at Craigmore where they found Sumner and the suspect vehicle.

Sumner was inside the home with a knife, wrestling with another man.

He was disarmed and taken outside, before he told police he had stabbed himself and collapsed.

Sumner was not able to be resuscitated and died at the scene.

Dozens of emotional friends and family members took to Facebook on Sunday.

“Rest easy my brother, sending my love, thoughts strength and prayers to all of yous,” a man wrote.

“Going to miss you my brother, there’s no-one like you.”

One woman who said she was Sumner’s aunty said it was a sad day.

“RIP my nephew Sonny Sumner, my miwi (soul or spirit) is ripped,” she wrote.

Sumner’s sister Chantel said her brother had “broken their chain”.

“Rest easy now my baby brother,” Ms Sumner said wrote.

A friend said Sumner would never be forgotten.

“I’ll always remember the good memories and parties, the fun times … love and respect your brother senders,” he said.

The victim of Saturday’s hit-run crash was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.
