Massive, snaking lines have developed following the reopening of a Riverland ferry service.

The Lyrup ferry, near Berri, resumed operations from midday on Wednesday.

The popular service is only open to light vehicles, weighing less than four tonnes, due to local council weight requirements on the connecting roads.

But it is struggling to cope with the demand, with people experiencing lengthy wait times.

Video of the situation on social media shows lines of dozens of cars waiting to use the service, which had been closed due to flooding.

One commenter said despite the service being available again, she would wait for queues to die down.

“I’ll stick to the long way around I think... Will be quicker than waiting for the ferry,” Mel Reichelt said on Facebook.

Another commenter said a detour was still the best option until lines disperse.

“With that many (it is) quicker going round, especially with cars with trailers,” Cheri Healy said.

Some commenters expressed sympathy for locals.

“Feel for the Lyrup residents, why I chose not to go that way,” Chantelle Marie said.

Others were just happy to see the service up and running again.

“Good to see it operational again,” Cara Bush said.

Elsewhere, Kingston Rd at Moorook has reopened to light vehicles weighing less than 4.5 tonnes, at 8am.

Department of Infrastructure and Transport maintenance teams have been assessing the remaining closed roads to work out the extent of the damage and what repairs are needed.
