Adelaide-born tradie James Vawser is putting down the tools and picking up the microphone for the upcoming season of Australian Idol.
The 28-year-old electrician has always had a love for singing and described being on the reality talent show – which premieres on Monday on Channel 7 – as a “dream come true”.
“Anyone that’s ever met me knows that I’m always singing and listening to music, singing at the top of my lungs even on the job site,” he said.
“One day one of the guys at work said, ‘What are you doing here? You should be out making music’. On that same day, it was like fate, the ad to apply for Australian Idol came up and I thought I would give it a crack.”
Vawser’s workmates joined him for the Idol audition, in front of celebrity judges including international stars Harry Connick Jr. and Meghan Trainor, Aussie singer Amy Shark and radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands.
“They came to my audition with me and were happy to be there for me which was great,” he said.
“I was excited to be in front of four celebrities in the flesh at my audition and it was really cool and scary at the same time.”
Vawser is currently completing his refrigeration trade to become a dual-tradie but hopes to pursue a career in music in the future.
“Going forward, whatever happens in Australian Idol, I would love to make a career out of music,” he said.
Vawser also encouraged other tradies to pursue their passions and give it a “red hot crack.”
“If you’ve got a passion for something and an opportunity arises, chase it. Just do your best and give it a crack,” said Vawser, who won Triple M Adelaide’s best singing tradie competition in 2020.
Australian Idol premieres Monday night at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
