SHE’s the world’s most famous camera-shy pop star and our most celebrated musical export, but yesterday Adelaide’s own Sia Furler proved to be anything but precious as she made a rare visit back to her hometown.
The vegan singer-songwriter was spotted casually enjoying lunch at the Central Market at around midday before stopping off to pick up some local figs at the Cactus fruit and vegetable stand.
“My mum, being European, wasn’t shy in asking for a photo,” said Cactus’ Joanna Pessios.
“Sia was really easy going and down to earth. Very lovely.
“She just said ‘let’s have a photo’ but I think people were starting to recognise her so she left pretty quickly.”
Sia was at the market with a group of six friends, but it’s not known whether her new husband Erik Anders Lang is travelling with her.
Sia’s mother, artist Loene Furler, lives at North Adelaide and her father, musician Phil Colson recently performed a one-off show with his re-formed band Rum Jungle at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
It’s been almost four years since Sia last performed publicly in Adelaide, at the 2011 Big Day Out.
These days the multi-award winning artist prefers to shield herself from the spotlight by facing away from the audience when she preforms and often hides under her trademark giant blonde wig.
She will, however, make a rare public performance next week in Sydney on Channel Seven’s Sunrise.
Like most things in her life, details of Sia’s appearance on the show and performance are being kept top secret but the show’s executive producer Michael Pell said it was exciting to have her on Sunrise.
“She’s a unique performer who is slowly taking over the world, and we can’t wait for her to take over Sunrise. Her performances on Sunrise will be unlike anything you’ve seen on the show before,” he said.
