Shocking footage released of hoons as new laws see 66 speeding motorists charged with criminal offences

Footage of hoons at stomach-flipping speeds on our busiest roads has been released as SA’s top cop says motorists who speed will be “treated as criminals”. See where they were caught.

Commissioner slams extreme speeders

Reckless hoons caught travelling at dangerous speeds have been captured in alarming footage as the state’s top cops slams irresponsible road users who can now be treated as criminals.

The video captured by the police helicopter featured motorists travelling at speeds in excess of 150km/h on major Adelaide roads this week.

New legislation came into place in December 2021 which can see extreme speeders go to jail, and 66 motorists have been charged with the criminal offence since.

Mr Stevens condemned extreme speeders.

“There is a cohort of our community that chooses to deliberately engage in reckless, dangerous behaviour on our roads, with no concern for the risk they pose to themselves, their passengers and other innocent road users,” Mr Stevens said.

“Make no mistake. These people behave like criminals and will be dealt with as criminals,” he said.

The new extreme speed laws see people travelling 55km/h faster in a 60km/h zone, or travelling 80km/h faster in speed zones above 60km/h face court.

Previous laws would see motorists gain an expiation notice for speeding.

Police detected four vehicles travelling at extreme speeds on Tuesday, including at Welland, where the motorcyclist was detected at speeds over 160km/h on South Rd, and another rider was clocked at 155km/h in a 60km/h zone on Main North Rd at Salisbury Heights.

Later in the day, a utility was allegedly overtaking other vehicles at speed and crossing double white lines on Fenden Rd at Salisbury, travelling at 110km/h in a 60km/h zone.

A motorcyclist was also caught near the intersection of Kings Rd and Salisbury Highway, which was allegedly found in excess of 150km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Meanwhile, three teenagers caught dumping a stolen car before stealing items from the vehicle have been arrested overnight at Cumberland Park.

Police were called to Avon Street about 3.30am Friday where they found the Toyota which had been stolen from Melrose Park overnight dumped.

Three teenagers walked off along Edward St towards Goodwood Rd where PD Rusty and his handler were quick to the scene.

Police arrested the trio and allegedly found property taken from the car in their possession.

A Broadview teen, 14, an Edwardstown teen, 15, and a Prospect teen, 15, were charged with illegal use.

Two were bailed to appear in court at a later date while the Edwardstown offender was refused bail to appear in Adelaide Youth Court on Friday.
