About 6000 properties around SA lose power overnight amid heavy rain and winds – 3000 still blacked out

More than 3000 properties are without power today as strong winds and heavy rain, brought by a cold front overnight, causes damage across Adelaide.

More than 3000 properties around Adelaide are without power today as strong winds and rain lash the state.

An SA Power Networks spokesman said about 6000 properties lost power overnight, with half in the Modbury area.

He said it was mainly because of tree limbs blowing off and damaging power lines.

Power was restored to most affected customers this morning, but there has been another blackout in the Modbury area today.

About 2600 properties in Redwood Park, Modbury, Modbury North, Modbury Heights and Ridgehaven lost electricity just after 12pm, due to damaged power equipment.

Other patches of blacked our properties around the city bring the total number to about 3100 without electricity.

SES state duty officer Tony Costello said there have been 40 calls for help across the Adelaide metro area since 6am today, bringing the total to 76 since midnight last night.

“By far the most common are trees down and some severe weather, which is normally water through the roof or overflowing gutters and things of that nature,” he said.

Showers intensified overnight as a cold front swept across the state, bringing more than 35mm of rain in the Adelaide Hills and strong winds that brought down trees.

A total of 36mm fell at Stringybark in the Hills, while Aldgate received 35mm.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Bonnie Haselgrove told The Advertiser the Adelaide metro area also received a soaking, with 20mm falling at Bellevue Heights in the south, 20mm at Glenelg in the west and 22mm at Burnside in the east.

“We had a cold front move through that brought fresh and gusty winds through the southern parts of SA and also some decent rainfall,” she said.

The West Tce gauge at Adelaide’s CBD recorded 16.8mm, while the Kent Town station recorded 17.2mm.

Looking elsewhere in the state, Ms Haselgrove said Kangaroo Island recorded a wind gust of 89 km/h at Cape Borda at 3.30am.

Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula also had a gust of 89 km/h at 4.45am, while Mount Crawford in the Mounty Lofty Ranges had a gust of 82 km/h at 9.45pm yesterday.

“Generally, most places received gusts of around 50-70 km/h,” she said.

Ms Haselgrove also said the overnight rainfall outside of Adelaide was mainly confined to the agricultural areas, but southern Yorke Peninsula copped a drenching.

“There was just 0.6mm at Loxton and 2mm at Ceduna, so not really much outside the agricultural area,” she said.

”Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula had 13mm … and Stenhouse Bay had 23mm, so it looks like southern Yorke Peninsula did better.”

A road weather alert is in place for Adelaide today, due to heavy showers reducing visibility.

Up to 10mm is expected to fall in the city today, with a top of just 16C forecast.

A maximum of 17C is forecast tomorrow, but only 1mm of rain is expected.

The wild weather this week started on Thursday, but the main front hit late on Friday and into Saturday morning.
