The surf’s always big when you’re only four feet tall, but that never stops seven-year-old Port Elliot twins Izzy and Conor O’Boyle from charging into the waves.
The unstoppable duo have been turning heads at surf breaks and skate bowls across the state recently with their fearless approach.
They’ve also managed to put a few trophies on the shelf, with little Izzy even taking out the open women’s category of a recent skateboarding contest.
But according to dad Ian, the twins ride for love, not glory. The professor in sports management at the University of South Australia, who also played basketball for Ireland, said Izzy and Conor took to the surf early.
“We live near Horseshoe Bay and they started off at the jetty end, where it’s a bit more sheltered,” Ian said.
“Then they moved further down the beach, where the shore break gets bigger, and by the time they were five, they were bodysurfing at baby Knights.”
After lessons when they were 5½, Ian said the pair had caught the bug.
Conor said he hoped to one day travel the globe “surfing the best waves and skating at awesome skate parks with my friends”, while Izzy aims to “surf the biggest waves and get loads of barrels”.
And the talent doesn’t stop there, with Ian and wife Melissa’s younger twins – four-year-old Finn and Louis – biting at their older siblings’ heels.
“At the end of the day, it’s not the competition that drives them,” Ian said.
“They just want to be in the water with their friends and have as much fun as possible. And there’s nothing that teaches kids skills like courage and resilience quite like surfing does.”
