Easter Sunday Penola smash on Riddoch Highway near Penola

A multi-car head-on crash in the state’s South-East killed two people on Easter Sunday.

A serious multi-car “head on” crash along a major South-East highway on the Easter weekend left people trapped in their vehicles and claimed two lives.

Police and emergency services were called to the intersection of the Riddoch Highway, and Three Mile Lane, 5km south of Penola, just after 5.15pm Sunday.

Authorities responded to reports of a three vehicle crash, two of which are reported to have collided head-on.

While details are unclear, emergency services have also reported “entrapments” in the wreckage.

On Monday morning, it was confirmed that two people had died in the crash, a middle-aged man and woman from Suttontown in Mount Gambier.

A police spokeswoman said the Riddoch Highway has been closed between Church Street and Tower Road after the “serious crash”.

Major Crash Investigators are making their way to the scene, she added.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area.
