See the RAA’s plans for new signage at Adelaide’s former Westpac building

One of the CBD’s best-known buildings – and once its tallest – has a new tenant. And the new look will light up Adelaide’s skyline in a different way.

One of Adelaide’s most iconic buildings is set to receive a new look with fresh signage gracing the city’s skyline.

The RAA has received development approval from Adelaide City Council to introduce new signage for what was previously Westpac House at 91 King William St.

Signage construction on the building, renamed RAA Place, should begin within weeks, with installation complete by the middle of the year.

RAA chief executive Nick Reade said the sign would light up Adelaide’s skyline with its ability to change colours.

“Like the organisation itself, the new RAA sign will be dynamic – able to change colour to promote and raise awareness for important causes and events.”

Local South Australian business Ecept is installing the innovative sign and their head Ian Widdop said it would include “the world’s best electrical technology” with “a unique lighting package”.

The business previously worked on signage for Adelaide City Council, Adelaide Metro and all three major universities in the state.

Mr Widdop said Ecept was eager to begin work on the signage, which will be “the largest sign project” the company has undertaken.

“The opportunity to work with an iconic brand like the RAA, and as a wholly South Australian-owned-and-operated business, is something that we are very proud to be involved with.”

The move into the new location was expected to allow growth for 800,000-member RAA.

“Our city presence will allow us to build stronger relationships with other city-based stakeholders so we can better advocate for our members,” Mr Reade said.

In late 2022 RAA announced approximately 200 of its 1200 workers would relocate to the building.

At the time, Mr Reade said the organisation was “bursting at the seams’’ at its Mile End headquarters

“It was a great opportunity,’’ Mr Reade said. “From a signage perspective it only comes around once every 20 years or so.

“We’re in the top few brands in South Australia so it makes sense from that perspective.’’
