Switch electricity providers and you could save up to $575 each year on the average bill.
The Advertiser can reveal the results of the St Vincent de Paul Society’s annual survey of 19 company’s prices, and as of July this year there are two providers that are saving their customers hundreds of dollars.
Powershop and Kogan Energy both recorded average-consumption bills of $2582, compared to the most expensive GloBird Energy with $3158.
Rounding out the top three were Sumo Power ($2768) and Energy Locals ($2773).
The largest operator, AGL has this year ranked fifth, with a bill of $2912, slightly more expensive than fourth placed Origin Energy with $2897.
Vinnies spokesman Gavin Dufty said to get the best deal, customers need to shop around.
He said the Energy Made Easy website was a free tool to compare plans.
“A number of factors lead to these price fluctuations such as changes in wholesale prices and retailer exposure to this, changes in the cost of poles and wires or the gas pipes in the ground, green schemes costs and retail margins,” he said.
“(To) make sure you’re on the best deal, shop around – you snooze you loose.”
According to the report, the average annual bill for households consuming 6,000kWh per annum is currently about $2,920. That is $40 less than it was last year.
Mr Dufty said there were a range of ways household could save money, even without switching providers.
“If you’re entitled to an energy concession, make sure your getting those,” he said.
“If you’re on a time of use energy tariff, and if you can change consumption, that can lead to energy savings. If doing appliance replacements, think about energy efficiency.”
Gas prices for average consumption were also ranked by Vinnies, with the best Lumo Energy on $1318, followed by Alinta Energy $1322 and Red Energy $1377.
The highest priced as of July was Engie at $1871.
According to the report, the average annual bill for households consuming 21,000 Mj per annum is currently $1,490. That is $95 – or eight per cent – more than it was last year
